Elections

In Belarus, the President of the Republic of Belarus, deputies of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus and deputies of local councils of deputies are elected by citizens. The President and the National Assembly participate in the formation of other important state bodies of executive and judicial power.

Elections in Belarus are general:

citizens of the Republic of Belarus who have reached the age of 18 are eligible to vote.

Elections are free:

it is up to a voter to decide whether to participate in elections and who to vote for.

Elections are equal:

all votes should count equally, and candidates running for public offices participate in elections on an equal basis.

Presidential and parliamentary elections are direct:

the President and members of the House of Representatives are elected by citizens directly.

Elections of members of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus are indirect:

members of the Council of the Republic are elected at the sittings of deputies of local councils of deputies of every region and at the sittings of deputies of the Minsk City Council of Deputies.

Voting method is secret ballot:

control over the expression of voters’ will during the voting is prohibited.

Electoral procedure is established by the Electoral Code of the Republic of Belarus.
