House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus

General information

The House of Representatives consists of 110 members elected by Belarusian people. Every citizen of the Republic of Belarus who is at least 21 years old can be a deputy of the House of Representatives. MPs may not serve in the Council of the Republic, be members of the Government, members of local Councils of Deputies, hold the office of President or Judge at the same time.

The House of Representatives of the National Assembly holds a session every year. It opens on the third Tuesday of September and closes on the last workday of June of the following year. Extraordinary sessions are convened by the Chairperson of the House of Representatives.

Key powers of the House of Representatives

  • considers bills;
  • calls presidential elections;
  • approves the appointment of Prime Minister upon recommendation of the President;
  • assesses the government's performance.
