The Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) must become a political and economic center of power, a platform of large-scale projects, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he met with heads of delegations partaking in the 16th meeting of the CIS Council of Heads of Supreme Audit Institutions on 7 June.

The Belarusian leader noted that negative trends have emerged recently. There is friction between the CIS member states, some of whom seek to distance themselves from certain commitments and act as observers, or probably even withdraw from the organization. Despite that the CIS in its current form is frequently criticized, the Belarusian side believes that the cooperation potential is far from being exhausted. According to Aleksandr Lukashenko, it is essential to give a fresh impetus to the CIS, enhance its international standing.

The President is convinced that audit institutions can play one of the key roles in the development of the CIS. The head of state stressed that the regulation of monetary and securities’ movement, the use of other assets in a vast part of the Eurasian continent is a guarantor of stability and economic security in our countries. According to Aleksandr Lukashenko only tough state control over financial flows and strict observation of legal regulations in this sector can guarantee productive development. “It is needed to step up efforts to prevent mismanagement, inefficient use of budget funds, capital outflow, illegal foreign currency operations, and other negative phenomena,” the President of Belarus is convinced.

The head of state believes that enhanced coordination between the regulatory authorities of the CIS countries is the most important task of strategic importance. This is especially important now when the world is shaken by crises which most adversely affect the situation in the CIS countries. Therefore, enhanced coordination between the regulatory authorities, the development of common approaches to the prevention of financial violations, the exchange of experiences in the development of new methods of work is a task of strategic importance. Because this means the security of every CIS state and the political and economic viability of the CIS as a whole, Aleksandr Lukashenko stressed.

The participants of the meeting agreed that the economic security plays a very important role today. The meeting focused on the global aspects of the CIS development, existing problems and the strategy of short-term joint efforts.

Heads of CIS supreme audit institutions praised Belarus’ achievements in state administration and development.
