Belarus has deserved to host the World Figure Skating Championships and has proved that it can do it very well, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he attended a gala performance of the European Championships in Minsk Arena on 27 January.
The head of state noted that sport lovers closely followed the showdown of figure skaters at the European Championships in Minsk although other major sports events were ongoing at the same time, like the Grand Slam in Australia, the World Cup Biathlon in Italy, and the Bandy World Championship in Sweden.
“We have forgotten about everything! What will happen when you leave? I believe that you, in particular, Belarusians, have understood what I mean. The atmosphere in Minsk Arena, the ‘frenzy’ (in a good sense) of the Belarusian society this week. We have deserved (I am addressing the organizers), we have proved that we can host world championships,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
On behalf of Belarusian people and foreign visitors the president thanked the International Skating Union for trusting Belarus to host the European championships for the first time in its sovereign history. “I hear positive feedback. This proves again that we are capable of bigger things. If you decide to come here with a bigger thing, I promise you that you will not regret it,” the head of state assured.
