Belarus President approves resolution on state border protection in 2019
Belarus’ border policy is aimed at strengthening the belt of good neighborliness rather than confrontation with the neighboring states, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he approved the decision about the protection of the state border by the border service in 2019.
“We should proceed from it. We are not locking our border to create problems for our citizens and those who want to come to us. We want to create a favorable environment but at the same time we should stop those who want to enter the country with ill intentions. It is particularly important in the wake of the 2nd European Games,” the head of state said.
Aleksandr Lukashenko gave an instruction to maintain law and order and to be as attentive and understanding to foreign travelers as possible.
The President recalled that the areas of work to protect and strengthen law and order in the frontier areas were specified for the State Border Committee a year ago. All necessary decisions were adopted. Control procedures at the border were optimized to make Belarusian border checkpoints more efficient. “Practice has shown that the customs service can perform certain functions of the border service in some cases. This is a rational approach, and this work needs to be continued,” the head of state noted.
“Given the growing negative factors associated with illegal migration, drug trafficking, smuggling (especially weapons), the State Border Committee shall increase the number of personnel to the required level. This is an unprecedented step but national security comes first,” the head of state noted.
Aleksandr Lukashenko ordered to undertake comprehensive measures to increase the personnel numbers and set up new border units. “First of all, this is about the revival of maneuver units or strengthening them. These are the reserve forces that can be immediately deployed in case the situation aggravates,” he said.
The President has raised a number of pertinent issues including how capable the State Border Committee is of confronting the existing challenges. “The number of challenges has increased even compared with the previous year,” the Belarusian leader said.
Besides, Aleksandr Lukashenko inquired about the measures that have already been implemented and the ones to be taken in the future to ensure the security of the country. He also asked what still needs to be done for the effective work of the border service
At the end of the meeting the President approved the decision about the protection of the state border by the border service in 2019.
