European Bank for Reconstruction and Development

The Republic of Belarus has been a member of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) since 1992. Belarus owns 0.2% of the total shares (The number of votes and the number of shares may vary slightly due to the Bank’s capital stock changes (usually an increase).

Since 1992, the EBRD has invested more than ‎€2.7 billion in the development of the country's economy. The cooperation of the Republic of Belarus with the bank has recently reached an unprecedented level, with the EBRD expanding its work with the Belarusian  public sector.

The main areas of interaction are:

  • increasing the competitiveness of the real sector of the economy, including the support for small and medium-sized businesses and private sector;
  • improving the sustainability and quality of public infrastructure services.

With the assistance of the EBRD, Belarus is implementing a number of big investment projects in the transport sector, alongside the project to improve the quality of housing and utility services, environment and energy efficiency. The Bank also assists Belarus with the M-10 highway PPP pilot project.

In accordance with its mandate, the EBRD also substantially supports the private sector by providing resources directly to certain companies.

The EBRD is also the fund manager of the Northern Dimension Environmental Partnership and the Eastern European Partnership on energy efficiency and environment, which allows raising grants for investment projects. The EBRD may mobilize donor funds from other sources, including technical cooperation funds.
