Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko took part in the national referendum on 24 November 1996. The head of state cast his vote at polling station No. 16 in Minsk.

One of the questions which were put to the referendum pertained to the constitutional amendments. “It is not the president, not the Supreme Court who needs the new Constitution. It is, first of all, essential for the nation, it is essential to create the truly democratic society relying on order and discipline in the country,” the head of state said at the polling station.

The results of the referendum in general demonstrated the absolute support of the president’s stance on the major topics in question by the population. Among other things, Belarusians supported the transfer of Belarus’ Independence Day to 3 July.
