Visit to the Khatyn Memorial Complex

On 9 May 2001 Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko visited the Khatyn Memorial Complex on the day of the 56th anniversary of the Victory. The head of state laid a wreath at the memorial and paid homage to the dead with a minute’s silence. Aleksandr Lukashenko also talked to veterans and members of the public. During an impromptu press conference after the ceremony, the president called the Great Victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War one of the most outstanding events of the 20th century.
