Signing of the Union State Treaty

Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko traveled to Moscow on a working visit on 1-2 April 1997. Aleksandr Lukashenko and Russian President Boris Yeltsin attended a meeting of the Supreme Council of the Community of Belarus and Russia to discuss the establishment of the union of the two states.
Aleksandr Lukashenko and Boris Yeltsin signed the Treaty on the Union State of Belarus and Russia on 2 April, initialed the Union State Charter, and signed a memorandum of understanding regarding the finalization and adoption of the Charter. “The main goal of the union is to improve the lives of our citizens,” the Belarusian leader said at the signing ceremony.
