Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko held one-on-one talks with Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing on 2 July.

During the meeting, the two leaders noted that the Belarusian head of state arrived in Myanmar after paying visits to several other countries. “I could not miss the opportunity to come and see you, especially while being in this geographically distant region,” the President said.

Aleksandr Lukashenko noted that he and Min Aung Hlaing know each other well, having met and held talks on many occasions. Those contacts have laid a solid foundation for the development of Belarus-Myanmar relations. Nevertheless, he stressed that the current visit and negotiations are of particular importance.

“The distinctive feature of the current relationship between Myanmar and Belarus, as I see it, is that we should launch a new stage in its development,” the Belarusian head of state said. “Together, we should build relations between our countries that will be regarded as an example for other states in this region. The well-being of our peoples will be the cornerstone of our relations. We are not joining forces against anyone. We are strengthening our friendship and developing our cooperation for the benefit of our peoples.”

Aleksandr Lukashenko congratulated Min Aung Hlaing on his victory in the presidential election. He recalled that during their previous meetings they had expressed hopes that this would happen.“It has happened. You have won. You won decisively and unequivocally. I congratulate you on this victory,” the President said.

Speaking about the agenda of the working visit, the Belarusian leader said the parties planned to discuss several issues, including the implementation of previously reached agreements.

“We need to move faster. You can see what is happening in the world. It is developing rapidly and often unpredictably. We see this as well. We must respond to this unpredictability with active actions,” Aleksandr Lukashenko stressed.

The Myanmar leader warmly welcomed the Belarusian head of state and thanked him for paying a visit to the country. “I am pleased to welcome you to our country. This is the second time we are meeting here,” Min Aung Hlaing said.

He pointed out that this was already his fifth meeting with Aleksandr Lukashenko in recent years, noting that the Belarusian President’s current visit reflects the dynamic development of bilateral cooperation and the high level of Belarus-Myanmar relations.

Taking the opportunity, Min Aung Hlaing thanked the Belarusian head of state for Belarus’ participation in the official inauguration ceremony following his election as President of Myanmar. He also noted the growing contacts between the parliaments and political parties of the two countries. In particular, a delegation led by Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Union Assembly of Myanmar Khin Yi visited Belarus in June this year.

“It is important to expand relations not only at the level of the leadership of our two countries, but also between our parliaments and our peoples,” the Myanmar President stressed.
