The state supports the activity of the Roman Catholic Church in Belarus and is ready to provide necessary assistance, President of the Republic of Belarus Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he met with Apostolic Nuncio to Belarus Archbishop Claudio Gugerotti on 4 June.

The head of state pointed out good attitude of the Roman Catholic Church and Vatican to Belarus. “I must thank you for assistance in restoring relations with the European Union. It does not really matter if these efforts will succeed, but I know that you want it a lot,” the President of Belarus said.

Aleksandr Lukashenko emphasized that the Roman Catholic Church is pursuing the right policy in Belarus and is always there for people. “Belarus will do everything possible for the Roman Catholic Church. I think there are no issues we cannot resolve,” the head of state said.

“We are aware that many top authorities of Vatican share your point of view on Belarus; some of them want to come here. Tell them that they are more than welcome. They will get familiar with the country, see with their own eyes how the Belarusian people, including Catholic believers, live,” the President remarked.

On behalf of the Belarusian people Aleksandr Lukashenko expressed the best wishes to Pope Francis. “We appreciate his position. He is an interesting person,” the head of state said.

Claudio Gugerotti, for his part, said that Belarus deserves utmost respect. He emphasized that the forthcoming visit of Jean-Louis Tauran to Belarus attests to the great importance Vatican attaches to relations with Belarus.
