During these minutes of the departing year I would like first of all to address the absolute majority of the Belarusian people. It is due to you that I have a unique opportunity in these exciting moments of history to enter the homes of Belarusians, into your families with the New Year’s greetings and wishes of peace and wellbeing.
My greetings also go to our minority. You should know: I regard you as an indelible part of our society, with its goals, views and aspirations. You have your own point of view, a special understanding of the world order and of the development of our country. It is your right, which nobody can take away from you.
But you must know: your opinion does matter. And we together with the overwhelming majority of our people will fight for you, your views. We will be seeking new ways to your minds and hearts, because otherwise it would be impossible to unite the society, preserve the country and address our goals.
The year 2010 is becoming history. The new decade of the new 21st century seems to have just flown by. These years, I am convinced, were special and unforgettable in our development.
The main result of the last ten years has become the creation of the foundations of our statehood, formation of a nation, development of a morally healthy society, creation of a powerful economic foundation for the country, strengthening a reliable system of national security, recognition of the authority of Belarus in the international arena.
We have gone through some serious trials during these years.
First of all, it was the financial and economic crisis, which was introduced from outside, which tested our resilience. The second test of the stability of our state was the recent election campaign. Some forces were trying to take advantage of it in order to shake the country.
But it is due to your fortitude, courage and reason that we have been able to cope with the challenges of the new century! We have defended our independence and a small piece of land in the centre of Europe, which name is Belarus. It is the land of our ancestors, which will be home to our children!
Lying ahead of us is a long way of struggle and creation. We have not only to hold out; we have to raise our Belarus to the peaks of civilisation. And in this , we can only count on ourselves !
A happy future of the Belarusian people depends on the patience, determination, persistence and diligence of each of us. We need to break in ourselves the provincial complex of “a small people” and recognise ourselves as a nation accomplishing not only its own objectives but also contributing to the image of entire Europe!
We have sent the following ambitious targets before us:
to become a developed European country comfortable for people to live in;
to create a new image of the Belarusian economy based on advanced knowledge and technology;
to make it to the list of the 50 countries of the world with the highest human resource development potential index.
I am confident – we will accomplish these tasks, because we are people-labourers, people-creators!
Crossing the threshold of the year 2011, some of us will feel a little sad and shed a tear, some will say indignantly “Good riddance” to the old year…
But whatever our attitude is, that was our year, and it is impossible to erase it from our lives. Let us bid farewell to the departing year, and let us look ahead, into the future.
I wish you, your families and loved ones, your children a happy future.
I wish good health and long years of life to the elderly people, and wish to see smiling faces of children.
I wish successes, inspiration, new ambitious endeavours to creative people, to all our intelligentsia.
My special warm gratitude goes to the factory worker and the agricultural worker for their selfless honest labour. You are the salt of our earth.
I bow deep to people in uniform, loyal to their duty, always ready to protect the achievements of our Fatherland.
To the youth, I wish to be true patriots of their country, find the right path in life.
I wish that everyone’s wishes come true.
I wish that the warmth of the hearth and home envelope you.
I wish that an atmosphere of peace, consent, sincerity and kindness reign in your homes.
I wish that work bring success, satisfaction and people’s gratitude.
Let us wish each other peace, goodness and happiness.
May love and wellbeing live in every family.
Happy New Year, dear friends!
