Meeting with NBRB Chairman of Board Pavel Kallaur

Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko hailed the stability on the financial market of the country and praised the contribution of the National Bank of the Republic of Belarus (NBRB) to it as he met with NBRB Chairman of the Board Pavel Kallaur on 7 February.

At the beginning of the meeting, the president suggested discussing the further actions and strategies of the National Bank to maintain financial stability, including some new measures. “At the current stage, the National Bank deems it necessary to get more powers following in the footsteps of foreign regulators. In order to enhance financial stability, we need some additional amendments to our legislation. I want to know what kind of amendments you want. This will help me better understand what we should do, and whether we should accept this proposal or not. However, I absolutely support the suggestions I have just heard,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

Speaking about the current situation, the head of state mentioned the stability on the financial market and the absence of any concerns about it in the society. “In spite of any critical remarks, what we had before and what we have now are worlds apart. Perhaps, some people do not like too harsh financial policy in the country, but it is aimed at keeping stability. Therefore, I am afraid to say thank you, but workers of the National Bank deserve this gratitude,” the Belarusian leader said.

Aleksandr Lukashenko reminded that the head of the National Bank is personally responsible for ensuring financial stability. “Heads of commercial banks know these approaches. Try to find common ground with them and build efficient work with them in the financial sector. We have not spoken much about money and finance in recent time. They say that money like silence. We follow these principles,” the president remarked.

The events to mark the 25th anniversary of the Belarusian ruble were also discussed during the meeting.

According to the head of state, the 25th anniversary of the Belarusian national currency should not escape public attention and asked the head of the central bank about the proposals in this regard.

“People used to call the national currency different nicknames, the zaichik and so on. Back then the government and the Supreme Council had to work in the toughest conditions. You all know where we started from. We have gradually built our monetary system, developed our currency. Today, the Belarusian national currency is widely recognized,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
