On 2 July 2000 Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko took part in a solemn meeting on the occasion of Independence Day. In his speech the head of state spoke about Belarus’ political and economic development and the country’s place in the world. Aleksandr Lukashenko stressed that the country was building a socially-oriented, multi-paradigm market economy, which had already been dubbed “the Belarusian model”. Opportunities for people of all population strata to show their worth for the benefit of the state are available within the framework of the economy. “Riches of the country should not belong to a parcel of oligarchs but to the entire nation,” the president stated.

Speaking about foreign policy, the head of state confirmed Belarus’ adherence to a multiple-vector policy and underlined the importance of preserving the country’s sovereignty.
