Session to discuss operation of border protection agencies

Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko gave an
instruction to improve the operation of border protection agencies taking into
account the drawbacks which had been revealed in certain areas. This is the
result of the government session held on 26 July to discuss the operation of
border protection agencies.
The President remarked that following his instruction there was a surprise inspection at border protection agencies, and its results were discussed at the session. “I was informed about the results of this surprise inspection. There were several opinions. We need to make an analysis. It is needed to thank some people and, maybe, punish some others. I decided not to do it behind the scenes. There should be a principled talk, we are military people. Moreover, I am seriously concerned about a number of results of this inspection,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
The head of state noted that this is the third discussion of border security problems at the level of the President this year. “It means that there is not only concern. Frankly speaking, there is strong dissatisfaction with certain aspects in the operation of the State Border Committee,” the Belarusian leader said. “Since Belarus is a transit country (the border acquires huge importance), we cannot neglect these issues.”
“The main thing is not thank or punish anyone. The main objective is to improve border protection. I do not doubt that it will be improved. It will be improved with or without you (this is the matter). We cannot have problems having such a big number of border guards,” Aleksandr Lukashenko added.
After the session the head of state gave concrete instructions to improve the work and training of border guards, raise the efficiency of work with the population in the border zone.
Aleksandr Lukashenko deemed it necessary to determine priorities taking into account such factors as economic security and counteraction of terrorist threats. The State Border Committee and all law enforcement agencies should constantly analyze the situation.
