Independence Day festivities

On 3 July 2000 Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko attended festive events held on the occasion of Independence Day. The head of state and top officials of the government, ministries, government agencies, public organizations, diplomatic missions, and representatives of the clergy took part in a solemn march along the key avenue of the Belarusian capital and in the laying of wreaths at the monument in Victory Square. Those present observed a minute’s silence in memory of the fallen.

Speaking during the solemn rally, Aleksandr Lukashenko stressed that the Belarusian people lived in peace and accord only thanks to the great deed of defenders of the Fatherland. According to the president, Belarus’ leadership believes that the rule of the people hinges on the unity of the government and the nation.
