Official visit to Armenia

The first official visit of President Aleksandr Lukashenko to Armenia took place on 26-27 May 2001. The head of state arrived in Yerevan in advance to take part in an informal meeting of the leaders of Belarus, Russia, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan on 24 May, and to attend a session of the Collective Security Council of the Collective Security Treaty Organization on 25 May. At the session, Aleksandr Lukashenko spoke on the military and political integration of the member states of the Collective Security Treaty Organization.

During the official visit, the Belarusian leader held negotiations with Armenian President Robert Kocharyan. A number of important documents were signed, including the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation. The Belarusian president also met with Prime Minister Andranik Margaryan and Chairman of the National Assembly Armen Khachatryan. The meeting focused on various aspects of trade and economic interaction. The head of state was also taken on a tour around the cultural sights of Yerevan, including Echmiadzin, the historical religious center of Armenia.
