Aleksandr Lukashenko meets with RSA Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Maite Nkoana Mashabane

President of Belarus Aleksandr Lukashenko reaffirms Belarus’ interest in developing cooperation with the Republic of South Africa. The head of state made the statement as he met with Minister of International Relations and Cooperation of the Republic of South Africa Maite Nkoana Mashabane on 3 September.

According to the President, relations between the two countries in politics and diplomacy have been increasingly vibrant. “Our ministers, senior officials have repeatedly visited the Republic of South Africa. We maintain regular contact. Ties between businessmen have been very successful in part of the negotiating process,” Aleksandr Lukashenko remarked.

“We have studied your country well. We know the economy of South Africa, hence our interest in cooperation with the Republic of South Africa,” the President said.

Aleksandr Lukashenko in particular noted that the Republic of South Africa has rich deposits of mineral resources and a rapidly developing agriculture. In short, the economies of Belarus and South Africa do not overlap. They are complementary.

“We invited the President of South Africa to visit Belarus. He agreed to come here in the near term. We attach great importance to this visit. I am sure if this visit takes place, it will give an additional impetus to our relations,” the head of state said.

Aleksandr Lukashenko pointed out the importance of the ongoing visit of South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation to Belarus: “We really hope that you will be able to learn more about our country. We are interested in it, because such key personalities determine the future of our cooperation”.

Maite Nkoana Mashabane expressed appreciation for the long-standing contacts between the two countries, economic ties and the warm welcome. “I have brought the most cordial greetings from South Africa’s President Jacob Zuma. It is with great pleasure that he accepted your invitation to visit Belarus. We will arrange the visit in 2014, after elections are held in South Africa,” the minister said.

Maite Nkoana Mashabane agreed that the economies of Belarus and the Republic of South Africa are complementary. “We are here to lay foundation for this cooperation and fulfill its potential,” she noted.

According to the minister, the meetings in Belarus helped determine the areas which have cooperation potential. “Resource development is among such areas. Here Belarus possesses necessary experience and equipment that we can use. The agricultural sector also opens up new vistas. This sector can be used by Belarus for advancing to the South African market as well as the markets of other regions of the country,” Maite Nkoana Mashabane stated.
