Address to soldiers-internationalists, veterans of war in Afghanistan

    Dear friends,

On 15 February 2014 we celebrate Remembrance Day for Soldiers-Internationalists and the 25th anniversary of the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan.

For a decade our soldiers fulfilled their military duty, displaying unparalleled courage, commitment and bravery far from the Motherland. We will always remember those who were killed in the line of duty.

The Afghanistan war conflict was the first large-scale anti-terrorist campaign of the modern time, an attempt to prevent the world from turning into bloody chaos.

After many of you had carried your Colors through the years of hardship, you continue to work hard for the benefit of Belarus. Today against the backdrop of new modern challenges the state honors the role of soldiers-internationalists in bolstering accord in the society, educating the younger generation in the spirit of patriotism, perseverance and selfless service to the Fatherland.

I wish health, happiness and wellbeing to you and your families.

    Aleksandr Lukashenko
