Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko hosted a government meeting to discuss the country’s regional development.

The head of state said that a number of large-scale events have been recently held to take stock of the situation and set overriding tasks for different sectors of the economy. Issues related to the housing and utilities sector, agricultural industry and construction were discussed. “These sectors make the basis of the Belarusian economy and predetermine its ability to address social issues,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

The President signed three directives, so-called roadmaps for agriculture, construction and the utilities sector. The documents set system tasks and provide for the instruments necessary to address them.

“Ways have been outlined to improve the education system and prospects of Belarusian science. We also considered these issues at the corresponding meetings and forums and defined phases for accelerating the development of regions. We agreed to secure social and economic development of 11 big cities within the next two years. Today, the government and governors have been tasked with the implementation of all adopted decisions, plans and directives at the local level. The goal of these program decisions is to improve the quality of life of our people,” the head of state said.

Aleksandr Lukashenko stressed that the foundation of the country’s successful development is strong economy. “I have reiterated that if we have any problems, we will have them only if our economy does not work well. We have no other problems. We first of all need to develop the economy of regions, create jobs. The main thing is jobs with good salaries,” the President said.

Attending the meeting are heads of government bodies, chairpersons of the oblast executive committees and the Minsk City Hall, the President’s aides.
