National Academic Yanka Kupala Theatre02.03.2006

The National Academic Yanka Kupala Theatre, the oldest theatre of Belarus, was opened on 14 September 1920. At the start besides the Belarusian troupe the theatre included also the Russian and the Jewish companies which later became independent, as well as chorus, ballet and symphony orchestra which in 1933 formed the basis of the National Opera Theatre. The core of the Belarusian troupe consisted of actors of “The first association of drama and comedy” led by Florian Zhdanovich who headed the young company (1920—1921). Among the first presentations were productions with clearly expressed national attitude (historical themes and extensive drawing on Belarusian folklore). With the appearance in the theatre of the dramatist and artistic director Yevstigney Mirovich (1921—1931) the company’s speedy professional growth began. An entire galaxy of actors and actresses who became the pride of the national theatre school emerges: G.Glebov, B.Platonov, L.Rzhetskaya, V.Krylovich, I.Zhdanovich, V.Vladomirski, S.Birillo, V.Dedyushko. New stage managers appear: L.Rachlenko, M.Zorev, K.Sannikov, L.Litvinov. The repertory is enlarged and diversified, the structure of productions becomes more complex. The wide acclaim and all-Union fame the theatre won at the Decade of Belarusian Art in Moscow (1940). The theatre’s company is viewed as one of the best in the USSR and is honoured with the name of the great Belarusian poet and dramatist Yanka Kupala (1944). In a decade it was awarded the title of an academic theatre (1955)
