The National academic drama theatre named after M.Gorky now is one of the most famous and favorite theatres in Belarus. It has almost 70-years history which always remembers all unforgettable moments and events forever tied with the history of the XX-th century.

In 1920-th it was a travelling troupe under the leadership of a brilliant actor, wonderful organizer, merited art worker of the BSSR - VLADIMIR KUMELSKY. But in 1928 the theatre was grounded in Mogilev and got the name a Regional drama theatre.

The repertoire of the theatre in general consisted of the Russian classics, but the group of actors who perfectly knew the Russian theatre school. They all formelly played in company with the best actors of Maly Theatre in Moscow, such as M.Ermolova, A.Sumbatov-Uzhyn, P.Sadovsky... Perhaps, that was a reason of awarding the theatre a status of the Russian Republic Drama Theatre in 1932.

In 1936 the toupe was enlarget by the group of young and very talented actors, which for a long time was a star ensemble and a pride of the Rus- sian theatre: D.Orlov, A.Obukhovitch, N.Ablov, V.Konopliansky, A.Kistov. In the repertoire of that period the Russian classical plays predominated as before : "At The Bottom" ( by M.Gorky), "Egor Bulychov and Others" (by M.Gorky), "Inspector" (by N.Gogol), "Anna Karenina" (by L.Tolstoy) etc.

In 1939 the theatre was headed by the prominent master of stage, a wonderful theacher, people's actor of the BSSR DMITRY ORLOV.
From 1947 the theatre was settled down in Minsk. The people's actress of the Russian Federation VERA REDLIKH became its Art director. This period was marked by the performance "The King Lire" (by W.Shakespear. Talent and mastery of the King's role performer, People's actor of the BSSR A.Kistov were compared with mastery of the great English tragic actor D.Wolfgang.

Meanwhile the cast increased by bright, talented actors and an actresses - Alexandra Klimova, Rostislav Yankovsky, Evgeny Polosin, Ury Sidorov, Ury Stupakov, Ludmila Bylinskaya, Alexandr Kashker, Izolda Lokshtanova, Bella Masumian, Olimpiada Shakh-Paron etc.

In 1973 the theatre was headed by a young, talented and extraordinary director - BORIS I.LUTSENKO, that leads the theatre now.
At that time appear theatre were performances, at once become big events in the theatre life of the republic: "Macbeth" (by W.Sheakspear), "Three Penny Opera" (by B.Brecht), "A Human Tragedy" (by M.Medach) etc.

In 1994 the theatre has got a status of the State Academic Russian Drama Theatre named after M.Gorky, and in 2000 - the National Academic Drama Theatre named after M.Gorky. Now the cast of the theatre hes got a lot of brilliant masters of stage and talented young actors. It is in a very good creative form and is ready to accept any interesting constructive proposal of partnership.

The theatre has a whole complex of stages:
- a big stage for 502 seats;
- a small stage for 40 seats;
- a stage "Theatre under domes" for 50 seats.
