National Academic Bolshoi Ballet Theatre

The National Academic Bolshoi Ballet Theatre of the Republic of Belarus (before 1996 known as the State Academic Bolshoi Theater and Ballet) was founded in 1933. However, the professional ballet in Belarus originates from the Mid-Eighteenth Century when the first ever ballet troupes in the history of Belarus were created in the estates of the princes Radzivill in Nesvizh and Slutsk, in the estates of A.Tizengauz in Grodno, M.K. Oginski in Slonim, S.G. Zorich in Shklov. Today, the theatre company comprises more than 100 of highly trained professional dancers, most of them being the graduates of the Belarusian State Choreographic College.

Among the soloists of the theatre, there are people’s and honoured artists, state prize winners, laureates and diploma holders of international ballet competitions. The work on forming the national repertoire of the theatre has always been accompanied by the creative assimilation of the classical heritage ballets and the creation of original and modern ballet performances. The producers and actors of the theatre have been solicitously re-creating the performances staged by the classical West European and Russian choreographers – Jules Perrot, August Bournonville, M. Petipa, A. Gorsky, L. Ivanov. Achievements in modern choreography are first of all linked to the milestone Belarusian ballet performances staged by the choreographer Valentin Yelizaryev (from 1973 he was the chief ballet-master, from 1996 he is the chief artistic officer and director of the theatre).

The ballets “Carmen-Suite,” “Creation of the World,” “Spartacus,” “The Firebird,” “The Nutcracker,” “Carmina Burana,” “Bolero,” “Romeo and Juliet,” “Passions,” The Rite of Spring,” “The Legend of Thyl Ulenspiegel” staged by V. Yelizaryev have become a visiting card of the theatre company both at home and abroad.

In pursuance of its statute, the basic area of the creative activities of the theatre is organization of the theatrical activities on the main stage (over 100 performances per year) and touring performances of the theatre company. Over the last 15 years, the theatre company gave performances in more than 30 countries of the world while many countries were visited more than once.

National Academic Bolshoi Ballet Theatre of the Republic of Belarus is rightfully regarded as one of the leading ballet collectives of Europe.
