I want peace for the people of Belarus, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said when speaking at a solemn meeting on the occasion of Belarus’ Independence Day on 1 July.

“Only by exercising maximum vigilance that we can protect ourselves from the tragic mistakes of June 1941. Of course, we are proud of our victories. We are victors. Still, you know, I would not want any more such victories for the Belarusian people. I would prefer that the war that claimed lives of millions had not happened. Our children will live after us. May they live being protected, in a free, independent country,” the head of state stressed.

This is one of the reasons why Belarus has been strengthening its Armed Forces which can fight back any aggressor. One of the latest achievements in this area was the development of the national missile system. “This is a strong deterrent factor, an important thing in ensuring security and independence of our state. We frighten no one. We are a peaceful nation. We will do everything to ensure that we have peace not only inside the country but around us. But we must keep our powders dry,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

The President is sure that blackmailing, threats, sanctions and bombings do nto solve problems. Therefore Belarus is set to develop close cooperation between the East and the West, the North and the South. Belarus has proved that it can be a good partner in addressing any thorny issue of the modern days.

The European Union and the United States have started an active dialogue with Belarus. “Whether it is due to ignorance, or inertia (most likely inertia), but in negotiations with us the West is still using the old methods: sanctions (some of them are still in force), political pressure, interference in the internal affairs of a sovereign state. The promises given to us and even reasonable mutually beneficial projects get delayed or loaded with conditions. With such actions, any subject of international law risks losing the confidence of his partner and ultimately risk losing in more important matters,” Aleksandr Lukashenko noted.

“Such half-hearted policy is especially anti-productive in the context of our peacemaking effort that has received high appraisal from the United Nations,” the Belarusian leader stressed.

Aleksandr Lukashenko noted that Belarus has become a full and respected member of the international community as evidenced by its extensive interstate ties, underpinned by trade and economic agreements. “It is especially valuable that we have such powers as Russia, China, and India among our friends,” the President said.

Speaking about the domestic policy the President stressed that the Belarusian model has proven effective. “We have built a solid social, economic and legal basis for our sovereignty,” the head of state noted. “I am confident that the people of Belarus will successfully overcome the current temporary difficulties. We will certainly achieve a higher level of economic development and better quality of life, because we possess invaluable wealth – the glorious history of courage and endurance, the unity of the nation, the sense of dignity, and an immense will to make our country strong and prosperous,” Aleksandr Lukashenko emphasized.

In the coming years, the country will need to focus the efforts on such priority areas as attracting investment for innovative development, ensuring employment, boosting and diversifying exports, promoting the expansion of information technologies, and creating conditions for harmonious upbringing and education of young people. “It is symbolic that we launch this great effort in the Year of Culture. The notion of culture comprises not only folklore, theaters, art schools, literature, cinema and festivals. It also includes technology-intensive production, wise land use, and respect for nature, law, and traditions. Finally, it is the spiritual core that has helped our people withstand the most challenging ordeals,” Aleksandr Lukashenko stressed.

The President named care for people as the main indicator of the country’s achievements, including a targeted policy aimed at supporting young people, mothers and children. “Thanks to the strong role of the state, all the funds earned by the country are invested not in foreign offshores, villas or yachts for oligarchs, but in the development of the economy and social sector,” stressed the head of state.

In his speech the President pointed to the importance of a healthy lifestyle. “Do everything you can to be just beautiful and healthy, and your children will follow in your footsteps. Do it for the sake of your children. Lead the way and make them follow you,” said Aleksandr Lukashenko.

In the run-up to the Independence Day celebrations, the President also called the attempts of certain personalities to belittle the scale and significance of the armed struggle in the occupied Belarus as sheer blasphemy. “In fact, here, in the rear of the Germans, there were several armies that created a sheer hell for the invaders and caused them irreparable damage. We will never forget that we owe our life and freedom to Great Victory over the fascist aggressors,” the head of state said.
