Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko praises the vigorous development of the Belarusian science and the enhancement of its role in the resolution of topical issues. He made the statement at the ceremony to present diplomas to academicians and members of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (NASB) on 23 January.

“The presentation of diplomas to the newly-elected academicians and members of the National Academy of Sciences in the run-up to the professional holiday, the Day of Belarusian Science, is a good reason for the meeting,” Aleksandr Lukashenko remarked. “I am sincerely glad to see the people who are taking part in high-profile projects testifying to the vigorous development of Belarusian science and the enhancement of its role in the resolution of topical issues in the country,” he added.

According to the President, it is especially important that the scientists are focused on the promising industries with immense scientific value, huge economic efficiency, a big export potential which are in demand in the national economy and the social sector. Aleksandr Lukashenko praised a big contribution of scientists to the designing of optoelectronic equipment for civil and social purposes and the development of space engineering. In his opinion, machine building, metalworking, and production of new materials are important industries, too.

The achievements of scientists are broadly used in Belarusian agribusiness. These include advanced technologies of plant cultivation and protection, breeding of promising varieties of grain crops, and mechanization of farm produce processing.

The head of state emphasized that Belarusian scientists take part in the development of biotechnology in the country. The Academy of Sciences has established facilities to manufacture biotechnology and pharmaceutical products.

“Belarus can be proud of the high level of medical services,” the President stressed. “The achievements of our leading medical scientists are well known. They receive coverage in the mass media and arouse the interest of the general public. Belarus can boast outstanding achievements in cardiac surgery, laser medicine, child nephrology, traumatology and orthopedics, endocrinology, cancer treatment.”

The head of state remarked that practical needs of people have always been the driving force behind scientific ideas. A true scientist derives inspiration from these needs. Of course, a researcher is very happy to see the results of his work used for the common good, Aleksandr Lukashenko remarked.

“Frederic Joliot-Curie once said that being part of a great family, scientists must be focused on how their discoveries are used. One should not forget that science plays a crucial role in the formation of a worldview of an individual in the modern society. Humanitarian sciences have special importance. Scientific achievements not only ensure the economic uplift and technical progress, but also make an input in the cultural, educational and intellectual potential of the nation. It is the foundation of the independent development of the country,” the President emphasized.

The head of state is convinced that the authority of the scientist and the prestige of the profession are on the rise. It is very important that Belarus managed to prevent the outflow of young specialists from this sector. More young people decide to work in labs, to devote themselves to science.

Aleksandr Lukashenko believes that in the Year of Youth it is essential to step up efforts to support talented university students, postgraduate students and scientists. It is important to share the best practices with them, to engage them in scientific research. The efforts to bring up the younger generation will pay off in spades as it is a guarantee of the continuity of scientific schools.

“It is good that many of you stay committed to the chosen profession. I hope that it will be a good example for your younger colleagues. Every scientist must be proud of his students and train those who will replace him in the future. You should promote promising researchers, encourage initiatives and give responsible tasks to them,” the President stressed.

The President emphasized that the integration of science and education is the imperative of modern times. He believes that apart from conducting research, it is necessary to train and nurture people who will generate new knowledge and efficiently use new scientific solutions. The President noted that today all important decisions are preceded by scientific analysis.

The studies and suggestions of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus are used while drafting Belarus’ socio-economic development program for 2016-2020 and the national strategy of sustainable socio-economic development for the period until 2030, Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

“We expect scientists to come up with new constructive ideas. The future of the Belarusian science, economy, culture and social field depends on you in many ways. We will discuss the most topical issues, some of them today,” the head of state said.

Congratulating the academicians on their new academic titles and the forthcoming professional holiday, Aleksandr Lukashenko emphasized: “Let the recognition of your achievements motivate you to reach new heights. Let your solutions be successfully implemented and scientific traditions promoted; let your students make you proud”.

Aleksandr Lukashenko presented diplomas to the academicians and corresponding members of the National Academy of Sciences and spoke with them.
