Meeting with Ukrainian President Piotr Poroshenko

Belarus is interested in the normalization of the situation in Ukraine, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he met with Ukraine’s President Piotr Poroshenko. The meeting was held on the sidelines of the five-party talks of the presidents of Belarus, Kazakhstan, Russia and Ukraine with the participation of the European Union.

Welcoming his Ukrainian counterpart, Aleksandr Lukashenko emphasized that Piotr Poroshenko had been to Belarus several times before he was elected President. “After your election, we held a brief, but principled and very important dialogue. I will speak about it today because some have been speculating too much about the meeting alleging that it was some publicity stunt,” the Belarusian President said.

It was your suggestion to get together to discuss things, to make well-considered decisions after the conclusion of the association agreement between Ukraine and the EU, to look into the current economic situation. It was the initiative of the Ukrainian President. You asked me to inform my counterparts about it. I did what you asked. I conveyed your point of view to them. And here is the response of the Customs Union member states, the Belarusian leader said.

Aleksandr Lukashenko reiterated: “If not for your will – we have discussed it often on the phone recently – this meeting would not have happened. This means that Ukraine is extremely interested in normalizing the situation in the country, in the center of Europe. Belarus is interested in it as well. You know our position.”
