Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko met with State Secretary of the Security Council Stanislav Zas to review the performance of Belarus’ national security, defense and law enforcement agencies in H1 2016 on 7 July.

The head of state inquired about the ongoing work of the law-enforcement bodies and the existing problems in the area. “I would like you to brief me on the performance of the country’s law enforcement system, all concerns and questions that deserve attention in the first place,” said Aleksandr Lukashenko. The President was also interested in the recent inspection of border troops which discovered both positive and negative things. “What will be your proposals here? What is the situation with other agencies, for instance, the Defense Ministry?” the President wondered.

Aleksandr Lukashenko also asked the State Secretary’s opinion on the optimization of the country’s power structures. The President cited the Armed Forces as an example: “We agreed that the military personnel will not exceed 65,000 men. We need to fulfill what we promised, though never compromising our defense capacity.”

The President was reported about the performance of the security, defense and law enforcement agencies. In general, they ensured the conditions necessary for the sustainable functioning of the public institutions, the rule of law, protection of the interests and rights of citizens.

During the meeting, great attention was paid to the safety of citizens and their protection from man-made and natural dangers, which is especially relevant given the weather in recent months. The State Secretary reported that positive results were achieved in all major areas of activity for law enforcement: law and order, prevention of crime (which is declining), road safety, fire safety and safety on water.

The head of state commended the security, defense and law enforcement agencies for the good performance during this period. It was agreed that the results of the inspection of the border committee will be reviewed at another meeting with the President.
