The banking system should facilitate economic
development, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he met with
Belarusian Prime Minister Andrei Kobyakov and Chairman of the Board of the
National Bank of the Republic of Belarus (NBRB) Pavel Kallaur on 16 June.
Aleksandr Lukashenko noted that recently he had not interfered with the issues regarding the development of the banking system, foreign currency market, and monetary sector. At the same time, he stressed that the main thing is not to bring the economy to a standstill. “All systems (in the banking sector) should be normal, transparent, and understandable for our partners, including market participants in the West. I do not deny it. But the economy should work,” the head of state emphasized.
“I get information that the situation is, mildly speaking, not like this in a number of fields. Therefore, the economic development is the main priority for us,” Aleksandr Lukashenko added.
The forthcoming redenomination in Belarus was one of the main issues on the agenda. “I was reported that the National Bank and the government have done a lot to ensure a calm transition to the new money. People are waiting for it. This is important for everyone,” the President said. “Therefore, it is a big event, even from the political point of view. And it should be well organized.”
The head of state also noted that the redenomination which is, probably, considered an unpopular event to a certain extent will take place in the run-up to the parliamentary elections. “It means that we are not afraid of anybody. We are statesmen, not just politicians. And statesmen always think about the prospects and development of the state,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
At the beginning of the meeting the President spoke about a new achievement of the Belarusian defense industry. “I am a bit late. Today is a happy day for us with regard to security and defense. For the meager amount of money we’ve been able to give to our military they have managed to develop and test new missile armaments. Missiles have been fired. The tests were very successful. Those were missile systems designed in Belarus in the last two years,” the head of state said.
Aleksandr Lukashenko instructed Andrei Kobyakov to prepare state awards for those, who had contributed to the development of the relevant missile systems. “Without any limits. Those, who deserve it, should get these awards. It is a massive accomplishment,” the President added.
