Meeting with President of Foundation for Worldwide Cooperation Romano Prodi

Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko hopes that Europe will adopt a sensible approach to the relations with the post-Soviet countries, above all, Russia. He made the statement in a meeting with President of the Foundation for Worldwide Cooperation Romano Prodi on 17 December.
“Our countries are located in Europe, and we are extremely interested in the improvement of relations with our European partners. But you should clearly understand that we are prepared for this improvement only on the principles of mutual respect. We are ready to build our relations on the basis of equality,” the Belarusian leader said.
“Just like you we absolutely do not accept the language of sanctions and we hope that Europe will take a sensible approach to the relations with the republics of the former Soviet Union, above all, with Russia. You cannot act from the position of sanctions, threats and so on here. The modern world does not tolerate it,” the President stressed.
Aleksandr Lukashenko said that the foundation established by Romano Prodi will help solve many issues on the international agenda. “Probably, we are not the only ones who are waiting for concrete findings and recommendations from your colleagues regarding the situation in the world and other issues in connection with the problems which have emerged on the international arena,” the Belarusian head of state remarked. Aleksandr Lukashenko noted that he would like to share his opinion and impressions of the situation in the world.
Speaking about Belarus-Italy bilateral relations, the Belarusian President praised the high level of cooperation. In 2013 the trade between Belarus and Italy made up about $2 billion. “You have done a lot for Italy. I must say that the basis of bilateral cooperation was laid down long ago, including during your time as Prime Minister, and this helped us reach this high level of bilateral trade,” the Belarusian leader said. “Therefore, I would like to thank you for the efforts that you have taken to normalize and enhance relations with Belarus,” he said.
According to Aleksandr Lukashenko, the Italian government once initiated the establishment of the Italian business district in Brest Oblast. “Belarus has fulfilled its obligations in this regard; now we are waiting for the response from our Italian partners,” the head of state said.
Italy will host EXPO 2015 to showcase the food industry. The Belarusian President said that Belarus will take an active part in the expo and thanked the Italian side for assistance in helping the country to get prepared.
