Belarus and Azerbaijan are close allies and have a robust foundation for bilateral relations, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he met his Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliyev in Baku on 12 June.

The Belarusian head of state praised the level of Azerbaijan’s preparations for the first European games. “You had only two years to prepare. It would be impossible if you did nothing before. We had no doubt that you would do everything at such a high level,” the Belarusian leader said.

The Belarusian President stressed that he could not but come to the opening ceremony of this inaugural sport forum. He had earlier expressed a wish to have competitions of the Olympic scale on the European continent.

According to the President of Azerbaijan, the leaders of the two countries maintain regular contacts. That adds momentum to bilateral relations. “Belarus is a friendly and brotherly state for us. We highly appreciate our relations and take pride in the political and economic progress we have been making as well as our joint projects. We see positive dynamics in all areas,” Ilham Aliyev said.

“Our relations are sincere, reliable and are aimed at successful implementation of the tasks we set,” the President of Azerbaijan said.
